Champion jockey Jamie Melham had racegoers in tears on Saturday after winning the group 1 1400-metre Orr Stakes for her late dear friend Colin McKenna. Melham, formerly known as Kah, won her first group 1 race under her new name at Caulfield, partnering the Ciaron Maher-trained Another Wil to victory. The horse was bred by Colin and Janice McKenna, however Colin passed away last year from cancer and was not around to witness Another Wil triumph.

'I've thought about this day, I dreamed about it the last few days, and it's amazing that things like this happen in racing,' Melham said after the race. 'There's a God in racing…this horse has deserved it for so many starts, but to do it for Col after his birthday was on Tuesday is just amazing. 'I know he's watching down on us and Another Wil lifted for his dad. That was amazing.'. Jamie Melham was in tears after her emotion-charged win on Saturday.

Melham paid tribute to her late dear friend Colin McKenna. Trainer Ciaron Maher spoke of Colin McKenna's affection for the horse. 'Colin always loved this horse in particular,' Maher said. 'I resisted the temptation to take him to that top level because he needed time to mature, and Col was always very patient and it's not fitting that he can't be here. 'He just would have been so thrilled, but I'm pretty proud.

'He was just such a great mentor and friend and supporter. It's just beautiful.'. Melham was married to fellow jockey Ben Melham in a stunning rural ceremony two weeks ago. 'We have both had some incredible days, but yesterday was at the top,' the couple said in a statement to Race Net. 'The best day of our lives together, shared with some incredible people.'. Trainer Ciaron Maher (pictured) said Colin McKenna would have been thrilled.

Melham revealed recently that she would be taking her husband's last name because she is 'old school'. The last several years have been eventful for Melham, who was recently issued a 10-race suspension for careless riding. She also endured a horror fall at Flemington in April, 2023. Both Kah and Craig Williams, another leading Australian jockey, were thrown off their horses during a race. Kah's horse Flyball tripped over the heels of Veight, the ultimate winner, causing her to crash into the turf.
