History repeats as fans launch petition to save Neighbours after unexpected axe

Neighbours fans have wasted little time in attempting to rescue the beloved soap from the axe once again following news of its unexpected cancellation. The long-running Aussie soap was axed last week by Amazon Prime Video, just two years after the streamer’s ad-supported service Freevee came to the rescue.

Filming will wrap in July, with the show expected to drop new episodes four times a week – including special 40th anniversary offerings next month – until December. The news came as a quite shock to fans, who wasted little time in doing what they do best, launching another petition to save Neighbours from the axe.

At the time of writing, the petition in question has already garnered 4,608 signatures. ‘As Neighbours faces its second cancellation, it’s clear that this is more than just a TV show it is a cultural institution,’ wrote fan Ashley, describing why the petition was launched.

The Neighbours fans have proven a true force to be reckoned with over the years, with a previous petition to save the serial after Channel 5 pulled funding in 2022 amassing a whopping 75,000 signatures.

It is believed that this petition played a pivotal role in Amazon Freevee’s decision to intervene and revive the soap. While no official reason has been given for Amazon’s decision not to renew Neighbours, It’s thought that the closure of Freevee – the platform that ultimately championed rescuing the soap – played a part.

The series often charts in the top spot of Amazon Prime Video’s most popular section in the UK and earned its first ever Daytime Emmy Nominations last year during its stint on the streamer. Neighbours streams Mondays to Thursdays from 7:30am on Amazon Prime Video.
