With the brisk arrival of winter just around the corner, gardening experts are united in proclaiming hydration as an "essential" step for hydrangeas to ensure they come back with even more impressive blooms next spring. With potential blooms lasting up to two decades, these beloved shrubs need one major pre-winter drink, according to gardening pros.

Authorities at Hydrangea.com have highlighted that the shrub's thirst intensifies as cold and dry weather takes its toll during winter months, saying: "Since hydrangeas are water-loving shrubs, it's essential to give them one last thorough and deep watering before the ground freezes.".

Soto Gardens confirmed this necessity, insisting that "every hydrangea type loves water", and "Make sure they are well hydrated throughout the year, including the autumn and winter. Big long drinks are best when watering hydrangeas.". Echoing the sentiment, plant gurus at Monrovia advised that it's vital for hydrangeas to receive deep and regular watering sessions given their naturally thirsty disposition, adding: "Cool, drying winter winds suck the moisture right out of the plants – and hydrangeas don't use lip balm. Doesn't have to be hot to be dry.

"In areas where a freeze is not an issue, water deeply but infrequently even throughout the winter. This depends on the amount of rainfall you receive.". To water hydrangeas at this time, make a small hole in the side of a five-gallon bucket and fill it with water. Then set at the base of the plant, allowing the water to trickle out slowly, reports the Express.
