When a woman hit back at her body shaming pal, it didn't quite go to plan. Instead of putting a stop to the cruel comments, she received a slap. Unsurprisingly, she was left reeling by the situation that occurred at her childhood friend's birthday party. So she took to Reddit to ask for advice on the matter.
She often “dreads” her friend’s annual get-together as her mate, Amanda, comments on her weight “every single time” she sees her. She's bombarded with remarks that make her wince – including ‘you’re so skinny!’, ‘do you even eat?’, ‘does your [boyfriend] care that you don’t have curves?’ and ‘your legs are like sticks!’.
This touches on the woman’s “worst insecurities” – and she considered avoiding the occasion altogether until her mum gave her some advice. She recommended pretended Amanda’s comments were compliments, responding with, “Thanks! I love being skinny.”.
If Amanda was “disappointed” with such a response, it would prove she was trying to “insult” her. The woman thought this was “great advice” but “failed to mention” to her mum that “Amanda was overweight". This led to all hell breaking loose at the party.
On Reddit, she explained: “The dreaded birthday party day comes. And of course, no surprise, Amanda immediately looks at my arms and comments how tiny they are. I ignored this comment. “Then later on in the day, we were standing in a group together and she was eyeing me up and down. She chuckled to herself and says, ‘God, you’re so skinny.’ And I thought, ‘ok here it is. Here is my moment.’ I turned to her, smiled and said, ‘Thanks. I love being skinny.’”.
