Lee Mack, host of The 1% Club, felt "ashamed" on Saturday (February 15) when he apologised to a contestant for pushing them "too much.". The popular ITV game show involves 100 contestants answering 15 logic-based questions that were previously posed to the public, with the aim of winning a massive £100,000. The difficulty of each question is determined by the percentage of people who answered it correctly in the previous round.
In yesterday's episode, the first question—a 90% question—asked contestants to rearrange letters on a can to form the two-word phrase "tomato soup." Only one contestant got the question wrong, leading Ally Davies to express her disappointment. "So, we've lost one person, Ally Davies," Lee announced, to which Ally responded: "Such a div.". "Oh, Ally, Ally, Ally. What happened?" Lee queried, and Ally humorously completed the chant with, "Oi, Oi, Oi," reports the Express.
"I wish you had been that quick on the question," Lee retorted playfully. Ally then explained that she was so focused on deciphering the letters that she overlooked the "two-word" hint in the question. Ally went on to explain why she decided to participate in the show, stating: "Because I'm 70 in March, and I wanted to come on the show and at least do well," to which Lee responded: "Well, you came on the show, the first part worked.".
Ally expressed her desire to spend the prize money on an array of stylish glasses to match her outfits, similar to Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith, renowned for her diverse eyewear collection. "Okay, yeah, keep trying different pairs until you can see the word soup," Lee quipped but quickly added a sincere apology: "Sorry, that was a bit harsh. I'm sorry, that was too much.". Even though Ally acknowledged he was "right," Lee expressed further regret: "No, I'm wrong. I feel ashamed because usually I go for somebody and have a laugh with them, then turn to the next person and do the same with them. I've forgotten you're the only one who was out. Unlucky, Ally.".
In the previous week's episode, viewers witnessed the show's largest win to date, with one fortunate player scooping up an eye-watering £99,000 - a mere grand away from the top prize. The episode reached a thrilling climax when five contestants faced the one percent question, all choosing to take it on. Despite four of them struggling to find the correct answer, Matthew Lock's gamble to continue playing brought him an incredible windfall.
"Congratulations, Matthew. You are the winner, and you get everything in the prize pot. You've just won £99,000," announced Lee. Overwhelmed with joy, Matthew exclaimed, "Crazy, I can't believe it." He then revealed that the answer came to him "straight away," although he was still reeling from nearly being eliminated in two prior rounds. The 1% Club is available to stream on ITVX.
