James Corden has spilled the beans on the real-life inspiration behind the much-loved sitcom Gavin & Stacey, leaving fans of the hit BBC show feeling all the feels since the last episode aired on Christmas Day. Fans of the series have been on an emotional rollercoaster since the final scenes played out, but they were given a chance to bid adieu with the BBC documentary A Fond Farewell, which graced screens on New Year's Day.
The documentary peeled back the curtain on the creation of the eagerly anticipated finale, while also strolling down memory lane to revisit the show's 17-year journey. James, famed for his role as the lovable Smithy, shared the tale of his friend Gavin, whose real-life romance echoed that of Gavin Shipman, portrayed by Mathew Horne in the series.
Speaking about the couple that inspired the show, the 46-year-old revealed: "My mate Gavin met his girlfriend because he worked in sales and she worked in accounts but they used to speak on the phone," reports Wales Online. "He was like, 'I'm just chatting to this girl at work and we just ended up on the phone for hours' and then he said to me, 'I'm gonna meet her this weekend' and I was like, 'What? ! They ended up having a frivolous weekend and coming back and [he was] going 'I'm in love with her! '" The lovebirds went on to tie the knot, James recounted to Ruth.
