For only the second time in the history of Newcastle United, a domestic treble will be alive leaving January. Even then, on the previous occasion in 1976, they were bouncing around the bottom half of the old First Division. Today, Eddie Howe’s side have won eight on the spin in all competitions, are fifth in the Premier League and hold a two-goal lead over Arsenal ahead of a Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. They are also into the fourth round of the FA Cup for only the second time in five years - but only just.

Howe was not happy with what he saw during a first half in which League Two Bromley took the lead and could have had a second before Lewis Miley smashed a super equaliser from 25 yards. But there was nothing super about a performance that lacked energy and quality.

The England winger had shown more urgency in those four minutes than several mustered in the previous 45. He replaced Harvey Barnes at the interval.
