A recent poll has revealed some of the most common concerns about solar panels as a significant 22% of Brits said they'd never think about installing the eco-friendly technology. Almost half (47%) are deterred by the length of time it supposedly takes to see a return on their investment, while a whopping 69% believe the upfront costs are too steep to make the switch worthwhile. According to the survey a third fret about the possible damage to their roofs, and 16% confessed they're just not bothered about living a more eco-friendly life.

However, experts argue that these misconceptions are causing nearly four million households to miss out on the chance to slash their electricity bills by up to 70%. The research, commissioned by Utilita Energy, comes as the company vows to roll out a nationwide solar panel fitting taskforce. The team at Utilita Energy plans to equip up to 500 homes a month with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Bill Bullen, founder and CEO of Utilita Energy, is a leading champion for the UK's solar revolution. He points out that misinformation and outdated beliefs are preventing people from embracing solar technology.

"Many people believe solar panels need constant sunshine to be effective. But this isn't 'true'," says Bill. "Some of the most productive days for solar energy can actually occur during colder months, as panels often work more efficiently in cooler temperatures.". "It's myths like these that deter homeowners," he explained. "However, the government's plan to triple solar power generation by 2030 gives us a real opportunity to bust these misconceptions and make solar energy more accessible.".

Many Brits remain doubtful about the cost-effectiveness of solar panels, thinking the energy savings don’t outweigh the upfront costs. However, Utilita highlights that industry averages show solar panels typically pay for themselves within 7 to 9 years. The company also reassures homeowners who worry about the lifespan of the panels. A significant 45% believe solar panels require extensive maintenance and will only last around 18 years. However, Utilita clarifies that modern solar panels can typically last 25 to 30 years and need minimal maintenance.

Interestingly, the survey showed that aesthetics also influence decisions, with 40% of people saying they are put off by how solar panels change a home's appearance. One in five even admitted they would hesitate to buy a home with pre-installed solar panels. That said, knowing someone who has installed solar panels makes a difference—36% of survey respondents said they would be more inclined to install panels if a friend or family member had them.

Addressing these concerns, Bill Bullen emphasizes the wider benefits of solar technology: "Solar panels bring substantial advantages not just to households but to society as a whole. "Rooftop solar is a key part of Clean Power 2030, which promotes local, low-cost decarbonisation, reduces household energy bills, and eases pressure on the National Grid. "With energy costs for UK households expected to rise again, solar power has never been more cost-effective. Panel efficiency has significantly improved, and costs have dropped over the past decade, making the return on investment better than ever.".
