A small plane crashed on top of a mountain and several people are injured. The plane crashed near into Mount Equinox in Vermont, just after 9.45am on Wednesday, according to the Manchester Fire Department. Three people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Manchester police Officer Derek Osgood told Vermont News & Media.

A New York State Police helicopter airlifted the victims and one of them was flown to a hospital in Albany. The other two were transported by ambulance to hospitals. An emergency alert on the crash to students and parents at Burr & Burton Academy stated that the pilot and passengers were OK, according to WCAX.

Emergency responders faced ‘difficult conditions’ like ice and snow, rough terrain and cloud cover while trying to reach the crash site, according to VT Digger. Snowmobiles, ATVs and trucks traveled through a plowed area to around halfway up the mountain, then need to take all-terrain vehicle snowshoes to reach the crash site, reported Bennington Banner.

Helicopters hovered around the area and agencies that responded include the police department, Manchester Fire and Rescue, Arlington Fire and Rescue, Bennington County Sheriff’s Office, Winhall Fire and Rescue and North Shire Rescue Squad. First responders gathered around Skyline Drive at Mount Equinox.

The cause of the crash is under investigation and Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board officials are expected to visit the crash site on Friday. Officials believe the snow and open space at the summit of the mountain softened the impact and prevented more serious injuries.

The crash happened about 3,200 feet high on the mountain, a Bennington Sheriff’s Department official told WPTZ. Drivers were urged to avoid Old Route 7. It happened a week after a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II crashed mid-air at Marana Regional Airport in Arizona, killing two people aboard one of the planes. Two others who were in the other aircraft were not injured.
