One of the longest-enduring symbols of Ancient Greek mythology, which continues to capture the popular imagination, is that of the Labyrinth of Knossos. Set on Crete, it was commissioned by King Minos and built by the great architect Daedalus. Lying below the Palace of Knossos, the labyrinth was a place where stone corridors led nowhere, and the infamous Minotaur, half-human, half-beast lurked in the shadows.

I am something of an amateur when it comes to knowledge of antiquity, but even I couldn’t resist drawing parallels between ancient Knossos and the unique structure of Crete’s Seaside A Lifestyle Resort. Carved into the cliffs of Mononaftis Bay in Agia Pelagia, on the island’s northern coast, it is perhaps the most visually striking resort I have come across. Set across multiple levels, its winding pathways weave between cascading terraces and discreetly hidden pools. It is a modern incarnation of the myth, erected more than 3,000 years later.

An adults-only, five-star haven on Greece’s largest island is designed for those seeking a serene escape, with panoramic views of the Mediterranean from sunrise to sunset. Here’s everything you need to know before booking in. A 30-minute drive from Heraklion Airport and a similar distance from Heraklion city centre, the resort provides a secluded retreat while remaining accessible. Rebranding as an adults-only wellness resort back in 2021, its sister accommodation the ACRO Suites is located next door, but aside from the two properties, the spot offers complete privacy.

Sat atop Mononaftis Bay, an 80-metre-long beach, guests can easily transition from the resort's elevated vantage point to the crystal-clear waters below. A minimalist yet bohemian aesthetic, the resort integrates natural materials and earthy tones to create a tranquil atmosphere. The architecture and interior design draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape, featuring rustic décor that complements the natural beauty of Crete.

The resort’s unique appeal lies in its steep, multi-levelled, maze-like design. While this does involve a lot of hiking up and down to access different parts of the property, it also creates secret alcoves of tranquility, like chambers of an ancient palace. (It also means you can get a workout in without even having to hit the gym). See more of our favourite Greek island hotels here. A cocktail of sun-drenched soil, time-honoured traditions and the bounty of the Aegean provides Crete with the perfect combination of stellar ingredients to enrich its local cuisine.

Culinary excellence is a cornerstone of the Seaside experience, with four distinct dining venues catering to different taste. The main restaurant, Veranda, overlooks the picturesque bay of Mononaftis, offering a broad selection of traditional Cretan dishes focusing on traditional local flavours. Similarly, at Minoan Cretan Taverna, the focus is on home-grown dishes — a must-hit for those looking for an authentic Greek experience.

The newly unveiled Oceano has the benefit of the most expansive sea views. The menu pays homage to the seafood, featuring locally sourced ingredients and global influences in a modern and chic ambiance. Perhaps the boldest and most memorable offering is UMI Restaurant, a fusion restaurant combining delicate Japanese cuisine with the vibrant flavours of Peruvian culinary tradition. The menu is simple but effective (don’t miss out on the bao) and the cocktails here were a particular highlight.

Alongside the resort’s signature restaurants, there are also various bars, including poolside venues and the Panorama Main Bar, where you can enjoy refreshing drinks with a view. Aside from the fine dining, Seaside also offers an inticing range of activities to keep you occupied during your stay. The resort’s crowning jewel is undoubtedly the Cave Spa. Reminiscent of a natural cave, it offers a unique setting with soothing lighting that instantly relaxes the body and mind, boasting a sauna, steam bath, indoor pool, massage rooms, hair salon and ice fountain. We were treated to the signature Essential Journey massage, an indulgent, 60-minute aromatherapy treatment tailored to your needs.

For those keen on fitness, the resort boasts perhaps the most beautiful hotel gym I’ve ever seen. Fully-equipped and state-of-the-art, its floor-to-ceiling window opens out onto a stunning infinity pool with some of the best sunset views in the resort. A yoga studio next door also offers activities such as cross-training, pilates, and barre, and two outdoor tennis and padel courts are available to book.

Beyond the resort, Crete beckons with a wealth of attractions. The fully-serviced beach at Mononaftis Bay is just 80 metres from the resort — a short walk down the steps takes you directly there. History enthusiasts can explore ancient landmarks like the Knossos Minoan Palace, and there are various hiking trails at scenic gorges like Samaria. In the heart of the city, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum houses a world-class collection of ancient artifacts, from enigmatic Phaistos Discs to delicate gold jewelry. Stroll along the Venetian harbor, where fishing boats bob beside the imposing Koules Fortress, or lose yourself in the city’s markets.
