Peace lilies, with their glossy dark leaves and beautiful white flowers, are a popular choice among houseplant enthusiasts. They also serve as natural air purifiers, drawing out moisture and toxins from the environment. However, getting these plants to consistently produce their signature white blooms can be a bit of a challenge.
Fortunately, experts at the Royal Horticultural Society have shared an easy solution to this problem - a simple task that encourages flower growth. In a YouTube video, RHS ambassador Jamie Butterworth shared his top tips for caring for peace lilies, including a crucial piece of advice for when the flowers start to fade.
He said: "Its easy-to-grow nature makes it the ideal starter houseplant and a perfect gift. Not only does it bring greenery indoors but it can also enhance any room, and they are brilliant air purifiers.". He suggested placing the plant in a partially shaded area away from direct sunlight, but warned against keeping it in too shady a spot as this could hinder its flowering, reports the Express.
If you notice the flowers fading quickly, he recommends cutting them back more frequently to improve the plant's overall health. Jamie advised on plant care, saying: "Cut back the faded flowers once they've started to do their thing, as the more you deadhead, the more flowers you'll receive.".
He also highlighted the importance of the plant's environment at home, noting that peace lilies flourish in warmth, ideally temperatures of 21C and above. With spring approaching, Jamie emphasised the need for proper peace lily maintenance, including repotting, which is beneficial at this time of year.
He added: "Repotting annually in spring is fantastic for the health of a peace lily, as the plants will really appreciate the refreshed soil. Wait until the roots have completely filled the original pot, and then pot them on.". Get email updates with the day's biggest stories.
