The Voice star Ryan Whyte Maloney has died aged 44. The singer appeared on the US version of the reality singing show in 2014, in which he was one of Blake Shelton’s top five finalists. His death was confirmed by the Clark County Coroner in Las Vegas, with People reporting that he died by suicide.

The cause of death listed by the coroner was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Just a day before, Whyte Maloney had posted a video of himself at what appeared to be a bar. Speaking to the camera he said: ‘Nine fine Irishmen for a private party tonight, and we will be rocking.’.

Born in Traverse City, Michigan in 1981, Whyte Maloney played the guitar, violin, cello and drums from a young age. He then went on to become the frontman of the progressive rock band Indulge in 2005 before starting to work on solo music after 10 years of touring with the band.
His debut solo album Where I’ve Been was produced by Sean O’Dwyer, who had previously worked with The Black Crowes and Pink Floyd. For three years from 2010 he toured the US, before auditioning for The Voice in 2014. Performing Lights by Journey, he turned the chairs of all four coaches, which also included Adam Levine, Shakira and Usher, and decided to work with Team Blake.
In the years since he continued working on his own music and last year performed at the opening of the Las Vegas venue Ole Red, co-owned by Shelton.
