Virgin Media users have been left without internet service after the company was rocked by an outage. At the time of writing, just over 8,000 people have logged problems on Downdetector, which monitors the status of online services. At the peak, 9,137 people took to Downdetector to report issues with Virgin Media. All other site access seems fine and I can access Azure fine on my other connections.".
Other users flocked to social media to air their grievances, with one tagging Virgin Media on X, saying: "Wifi issues again and unable to access any Virgin Media help as it seems nothing is working... My Virgin Media, web pages etc..." Another user made a jab at the company saying: "Oh look, Vicrgin Media is on fire again. Must be the weekly outage.".
According to Downdetector's outage map, there are several hotspots across the UK where people are reporting the majorty of issues. The largest hotspot for reported Virgin Media issues is London, with Plymouth, Manchester, Nottingham and Birmingham also reporting high concentrations of issues.
Elsewhere, users in Brighton, Oxford, Cambridge, Norwich, Belfast, and Glasgow have reported issues. There are also smaller hotspots in Dundee, Edinburgh, Newcastle upon Tyne, and the Leeds and Sheffield areas. Users have said they are "frustrated" with the disruption, as many say they are unable to "even check service status" on Virgin Media's website "as i twon't load probably due to traffic".
A spokesperson for Virgin Media said: "We are aware that some customers are experiencing intermittent issues with their services. We apologise for any inconvenience and are working to fix this as a priority.". Some users reported that their internet had returned with 30 minutes of initially going down, while others complained of being left in the dark as they were unable to access Virgin Media's service checker. The internet outage has caused widespread issues for many home workers, as one reported: "Went down about half 10 (Glasgow). Wifi appears to be running fine for internet browsing on my phone. However, cannot access anything on my work laptop; teams, outlook, internet and other systems.".
Issues have also been reported wih Microsoft this morning, with many users struggling with "intermitent and/or slow access to Azure-hosted services" this morning and issues reported with Microsoft 365, which encompasses subscription plans allowing the use of Microsoft Office software and cloud-based software such as Skype for Business Server and others.
"Intermittent and/or slow access - Mostly unusable, no status page, no use calling the helpdesk as all you get is we're aware of the problem and working on it even as a priority user, complete joke when you WFH (work from home) and are reliant on these services," wrote one frustrated user. Another said they were "trying desperately to work from home but no internet and can't access the Virgin Media app to check the service status - just says can't connect to the Virgin Media service status even on the app.".
