Adil Rashid has regained the number one ranking amongst Twenty20 bowlers following his outstanding shutdown of India’s batsmen on Tuesday night. The 36-year-old Yorkshireman has returned outstanding combined figures of 8-0-29-2 in the past two Twenty20 contests here, in fact, orchestrating the 26-run win in Rajkot with a virtuoso leg-spinner’s performance after a similarly miserly analysis in Chennai.
Rashid first sat atop the ICC’s bowling charts in late 2023, but was toppled by West Indies’ Akeal Hosein last month. His return to the summit coincides with England team-mate Jofra Archer surging up to sixth, one place behind the prolific India leggie Varun Chakravarthy.
Meanwhile, Jamie Smith will be monitored over the next couple of days after feeling discomfort in his calf while keeping wicket and leaving the field four overs into India’s chase. He is unlikely to be considered for Friday’s penultimate match of the series, and if a cautious approach towards Smith is maintained, Joe Root could be used as batting cover in the event of injury or illness for the fifth and final game in Mumbai.
Adil Rashid has returned to the top of the T20 bowlers rankings after his display in Rajkot. The Yorkshireman went for just 15 from his four overs, and picked up the wicket of Tilak Varma. The tourists cut the deficit to 2-1 and recorded their first win of the five-match T20 series.
