Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg between Newcastle and Arsenal pitted the former clubs of Alan Shearer and Ian Wright up against one another, and it was clear who came out on top. Newcastle carried a two-goal lead with them to St James' Park, and they added to their advantage through Jacob Murphy before half-time. The winger's goal came after fine work from Alexander Isak, and the striker caused problems for centre-backs Gabriel and William Saliba throughout the eventual 2-0 win.

Co-commentator Gary Neville was particularly impressed by the Swedish international, but he wasn't the only one. Shearer didn't even wait until full-time to tease former Arsenal star Wright, suggesting he already felt the game was over as a contest by the break. "Hey @IanWright0 talk to me about our boy Isak against your 2 centre backs!!!" Shearer wrote on social media. However, a fair few Gunners fans seemed convinced they would be seeing Newcastle star Isak in an Arsenal shirt next season.

Isak has 17 Premier League goals this season, at a rate of one for every 106 minutes on the pitch, and his goal in the first leg against Arsenal was one of two in the Carabao Cup. He needs just six more to match his tally of 25 in all competitions from last season, a career-best return. There were plenty of calls from fans for Arsenal to break the bank for the Swede during the winter transfer window, but it wasn't to be. A summer approach could yet arrive, though all the noise so far has been around a North London switch for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko.

"Enjoy it whilst it lasts, he'll be in an Arsenal shirt next season," one fan wrote in reply to Shearer, while another said "He is going to look great in an Arsenal shirt next year fella". Isak remains a Newcastle player for now, though, and was a key factor in Eddie Howe's side executing their gameplan to perfection. Will Newcastle win the Carabao Cup? Have your say in the comments section. "We wanted to get pressure on them [William Saliba and Gabriel] and in order to do that we had to get bodies in the right areas and press high - that is how we decided to do it," Howe told Sky Sports. "You know you are playing against elite players and one mistake can make things difficult.

"We had to be ourselves, be front foot. If not then it can quickly be 1-0 and 2-0 and then you are on the back foot. We had to work on set plays as their set play threat is so high. In the reverse fixture there were some moments where we got a bit lucky. "Again our team selection was based on having height, especially without Joelinton, we needed Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Sven Botman. We defended the set plays really well today.".
