A detainee who forcibly broke out of Yarl's Wood immigration removal centre has slammed his experience in the UK, saying England's 'not the place everyone fantasises' about. In April 2023, eight Albanian men escaped through the perimeter fence at the site in Milton Ernest, Bedfordshire, leading to a nationwide police manhunt.
Now, the case is being explored in Channel 4's 24 Hours In Police Custody: Breakout, detailing the efforts of Bedfordshire Police to track down the escapees - who were all at risk of being sent back to their home country. In addition, police found that all eight men were in the UK illegally and had links to the illicit drugs trade.
Speaking in the documentary, Mariglen Coha, one of the initial escapees, revealed that moving to England had far from lived up to his hopes after fleeing from Albania. After returning to Tirana in Albania, he said: 'It should be known that we are being treated very badly by those in control in England. You keep them 4, 5, 6, 7, months in isolation.
'You don't let them claim asylum or let them go back to their own country. I didn't go there to work in a drug house - this does not represent us. 'It doesn't bring out the best that we can show as Albanians. England is not the place which everyone fantasises about. England just added to my debt and nothing else.
