Amad Diallo: How did a player who looked so lost at Rangers come to represent the future for Man Utd?

It was back in January 2022 when Giovanni van Bronckhorst sought to boost his Rangers team’s chances of success at home and abroad by bringing in four players. James Sands was loaned from New York FC. Mateusz Zukowski signed permanently from Lechia Gdansk. Aaron Ramsey made a temporary switch from Juventus — and a young man by the name of Amad Diallo arrived to begin a five-month stint farmed out from Manchester United.
Notwithstanding that the latter was only 19 at the time, the fact the Old Trafford club had paid Atalanta £37million for him two years previously inevitably saw him arrive at Ibrox to a huge fanfare. He announced himself to the Rangers support in style by scoring on his debut against Ross County and signed off by playing in a victorious Scottish Cup-winning side against Hearts.
All told, though, he truthfully made little impact during his 13 games for the Ibrox side. Raw and erratic, he looked like the epitome of United’s scatter-cash approach of the past decade. Visibly shell-shocked on the February night Van Bronckhorst’s side lost their grip on the title when they crashed 3-0 at Parkhead, Amad suffered the ignominy of being subbed off at half-time.
Amad Diallo was signed by then Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst in January 2022. The Ivorian netted within five minutes of his Rangers debut in a 3-3 draw against Ross County. He struggled to make much of an impression during his time in the Scottish top flight.
