Celtic face an anxious wait to discover if their fans will be banned from the away leg of their Champions League play-off after a smoke bomb was thrown on to the pitch during their 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa. Europe’s governing body recently handed the Parkhead club a suspended ban on selling tickets to travelling fans after fireworks were let off during the defeat to Borussia Dortmund last October.
UEFA’s control, ethics and disciplinary committee will study the report of Maltese match delegate Adrian Casha before considering whether there is a case to answer. Illicit chants and banners displayed by Celtic fans at Villa Park could also come under the spotlight.
Despite losing on Wednesday night, the Scottish champions did enough to secure 21st place in the new league format and will learn on Friday if they face Real Madrid or Bayern Munich for a place in the last 16. Now it remains to be seen if their supporters will be allowed to attend the glamour trip to Spain or Germany.
Green smoke comes from in front of the away section during Wednesday night's game at Villa. Manager Brendan Rodgers had previously appealed to fans to heed the warning shot fired by UEFA when they also fined the club £16,700 for the ‘lighting of fireworks’ during the 7-1 thumping in Dortmund.
