Ben Chilwell is set to stay at Chelsea unless a new club arrives with a late January window swoop that can revive the England left back's career. Sources say Chilwell is not close to leaving the Blues, for whom he has appeared only once this season – as a substitute in the Carabao Cup win over League Two Barrow in September.
The 28-year-old Englishman has continued to train at Cobham to maintain fitness but with nothing currently lined up, he is now facing a full season without meaningful first-team football. Chelsea had hoped to find him a loan this month in order to give him regular game time between now and the end of the season.
He was left out of their FA Cup victory over League Two Morecambe three weeks ago as the Blues did not want to risk injury while trying to find him a new home. With Chilwell in line to stay, Chelsea now face having to try to sell him in the summer all over again. They previously failed to do so when they managed to get others in their so-called ‘bomb squad’ to new clubs, including Raheem Sterling on a season-long loan to Arsenal.
Ben Chilwell looks set to stay at Chelsea despite the club's efforts to move him on in January. Chilwell's only appearance in all competitions this season came in the EFL Cup in September. Chilwell, pictured in training, cost Chelsea £50m in 2020 and he is under contract until 2027.
Manager Enzo Maresca has decided that Chilwell is not his type of full back and is unlikely to change that stance if he stays. Despite being linked to Crystal Palace, who lost Trevoh Chalobah when he was recalled by Chelsea, Mail Sport understands there is nothing in that speculation.
