A reboot of the 90s classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer is reportedly in the works. The original show ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, and it is now set for a return to out screens after more than two decades, if rumours are to be believed. Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to reprise her titular role, while Buffy super fan Chloé Zhao, who won the Oscar for best director in 2020 for Nomadland, set to direct the pilot episode.
Dolly Parton, whose production company, Sandollar Productions, made the original series revealed last year how teams were “working on” bringing Buffy back. Buffy, which originally started in 1997, follows the story of Buffy Summers - played by Sarah Michelle Gellar - who is a “slayer”, tasked with battling the supernatural - including, most often, vampires. During her battles, she is guided by her watcher Rupert Giles, who was played by Anthony Stewart.
But rather than follow solely Buffy, it is believed the series will shift its focus to a new slayer, with Sarah Michelle Gellar stepping in on occasion to offer help and advice to the newbie. Original Buffy creator Joss Whedon is not believed to be part of the new project following past allegations of misconduct. He was accused in 2021 of toxic misconduct on the set of Justice League and Buffy the Vampire Slayer leading to Sarah Michelle Gellar taking to social media to have her say on “abusers”.
