Figures from the Home Builders Federation found the number of planning permissions granted in the third quarter of last year had dropped by 10 per cent to the lowest figure since 2006.

The site near Selby, North Yorkshire, produces 5 per cent of the UK’s electricity but Drax argued it was not viable without renewable energy subsidies for burning wood pellets.
