Business and union leaders were quick to welcome today’s strong backing for a third runway at Heathrow from Rachel Reeves as a keystone of a new dash for growth. Karim Fatehi, chief executive of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry said: “Trade through airports is essential for London and the wider UK’s business community. Heathrow’s role as a hub airport is crucial and unique and a third runway is much-needed. Our Green Skies report shows that four in five London business leaders agree that air connectivity is vital to London’s global competitiveness, international trade, and economic growth.”.
Matt Jaffa, London spokesperson for the Federation of Small Business (FSB) said: ”FSB is highly supporting of the announcement to expand Heathrow. We were told over 10 years ago it was running at 98% capacity, with the right environmental checks we have got the ability to demonstrate that London and the UK is open for business. This will provide great export opportunities and procurement opportunities for small business, Local business will benefit greatly.”.
Alun Cornish, Manager Director Ramp and Gateways at FedEx Europe, said: Expansion at Heathrow is a step in the right direction for UK growth. To fully realise its potential, it’s crucial that expansion plans include provisions for cargo growth alongside passenger flights. The ability to efficiently import and export goods is essential for UK economic growth, so it's vital that cargo forms part of the UK’s future airport strategy. Trade is a cornerstone of our economy, and our research last year revealed that the UK remains a leading exporter to both the EU and other global markets. Increased capacity in UK supply chains would be welcomed and would be a key enabler of the UK’s plans for growth.
