Call the Midwife viewers have been worrying about what the future holds for Nancy Corrigan (portrayed by Megan Cusack) at Nonnatus House after she set her sights on a wedding, courtesy of a hasty engagement. In Sunday's gripping instalment of the beloved BBC serenade to the seventies (January 5), fans saw Nancy and her dashing beau Roger Nobel (Conor O'Donnell) broadcast their intention to be hitched in six months, their love caught up in a fast-moving whirlwind.
This blossoming romance between the midwife and the charming pharmaceutical salesman has picked up momentum since their festive encounter during the Christmas special and it's racing forward without any sign of brakes. Adding to her windfall of good fortune, Nancy let slip that an old job proposition had resurfaced, complete with a humble abode attached.
Excitement was infectious as she shared her dreams with the nurses and the devout residents of Nonnatus House. However, shadows loomed when Roger's mum Esther (brought to life by Andrea Irvine) cast the first stone, armed with religious convictions against the union, reports the Express.
Esther burst upon the scene in Poplar, sparing no time to confront Nancy, saying: "He implied you were respectable," to which Nancy promptly defended, "I am completely respectable.". Unmoved, Esther countered, "You're an unmarried mother," though Nancy cut back in: "I was also reared by nuns and I still live in a convent.".
