Chelsea tried to hijack Tottenham's deadline day loan move for Bayern Munich star Mathys Tel, according to reports. In the final hour on deadline day, Spurs announced that they had sealed a short-term loan for Tel - with an option to buy in the summer for £46million on a six-year deal. Tel had rejected Spurs last week — despite chairman Daniel Levy flying to Munich to meet him — as Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal made their interest known.
According to L'Equipe, Chelsea's interest went as far as the side attempting to hijack Spurs' loan move for the forward on Monday - but they failed in doing so. The outlet claim that their approach came too late, though, as the player had already chosen to join Spurs. Mail Sport revealed Tel performed a dramatic U-turn to join Tottenham on loan from Bayern Munich after being convinced by a phone call from Ange Postecoglou.
Mathys Tel joined Spurs on deadline day after rejecting them just a few days earlier. Ange Postecoglou managed to convince the Bayern Munich forward to move to north London. United baulked at paying a £5million loan fee for the 19-year-old and that left the door open for Spurs manager Postecoglou to telephone Tel and convince the Frenchman that Spurs can give him the game time he craves. As Levy negotiated an option to buy Tel in the summer with Bayern, the player and his agent Gadiri Camara jumped on a private jet and landed at Farnborough Airport at 2.30pm before heading for a medical.
It has been a frantic few days for Levy, who has been a target for supporters following Spurs’ dip in form. Spurs hijacked Wolves’ £20m deal for Lens defender Kevin Danso on Saturday but were then rebuffed in a bold £70m move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi on Monday. They also lost out to Aston Villa last night in an attempt to sign Axel Disasi on loan from Chelsea, after learning Radu Dragusin is likely to miss the rest of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
