UNLV stunned college football fans with a successful fake punt against Cal during the Art of Sport LA Bowl on Wednesday night, signaling the Rebels' continuing to roll without departed head coach Barry Odom. Odom left for Purdue and those who saw UNLV emerge as one of the best Group of Five teams in the country may have not noticed a difference based on the reaction to the fake punt.
The incredible misdirect occurred early in the second quarter and UNLV on its own side of midfield, with the Rebels looking to give the ball back to the Bears down three points. Instead, after the long snap was received by Marshall Nichols, the punter flips it over the blockers in the trenches and straight into the arms of Greg Burrell.
Burrell caught the ball behind the line of scrimmage, avoiding an illegal man downfield penalty and had plenty of green grass in front of him, eventually being downed inside the Cal 20-yard line. A few plays later, Jacob De Jesus caught a touchdown pass from Hajj-Malik Williams, with UNLV never trailing in the game again and gridiron mans marveling at the trick play.
