British tennis star Emma Raducanu has vowed to stop a ‘dangerous’ vicious cycle with injuries ahead of the 2025 Australian Open. Yutaka Nakamura, her new strength and conditioning specialist, has taken a deep dive into why Raducanu continues to be impacted by injury issues.
It was decided that Raducanu’s body has been often not in shape for competitive matches because of an inadequate recovery process. Raducanu, ranked world No.10 in 2022, sensationally won a Grand Slam singles title at the US Open three years ago but has struggled with various injury problems ever since, even after triple surgery in May 2023.
As Raducanu, 22, prepares for the first major tournament of 2025, which gets underway on January 12, she has opened up about the ‘vicious cycle’ she found herself in. ‘I think part of it has been load,’ Raducanu said at an end-of-season briefing before she flies to New Zealand on Friday. ‘The tournament is happening, I really want to play it, but I’ve not put in enough training.
‘I’ve had two weeks off because of a different injury and I’m like, ‘OK, that injury has settled’. But then I go play a match and literally in the first match something starts hurting. I got into that vicious cycle and it’s pretty dangerous to be in.’.
