You never know when a rare coin is worth more than face value – unless you have it checked. Since coins are a hot topic these days, experts are constantly advising collectors to check their stash for any hidden gems. Now TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard is on a mission to alert the British public about two coins which could be worth hundreds more than face value.
According to him, one recently sold for £205 on eBay while the other is valued at £750. Speaking to his followers, the user asked: "Have you ever found a coin that just doesn't look right? It could be an error!" He then revealed details about two specific coins, starting with the error £1 coin, which has the new £1 design struck onto an old £1 coin base.
This error is believed to have occurred when the old round £1 coin was replaced with the new 12-sided coin in 2017. The user also mentioned a bronze 20p coin that has been creating a stir online after experts claimed it recently sold for nearly £800.
The user continued: "One mistake collectors want to get their hands on is this normally silver 20p coin in bronze. This happened after being struck onto the metal normally struck for a 1p coin that had slipped into the wrong batch. "This error has been confirmed by the Royal Mint as an extremely sought-after minting error. These are super rare and are not specific to any year. We've had a look online to see how much these error coins sell for but it doesn't look like there are any currently available on sale. But experts have previously valued these coins at £750 each.".
