West Ham defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been dubbed “outstanding” following his display against Aston Villa on Sunday. Wan-Bissaka, who signed a seven-year deal with the Hammers in August after a £15million transfer from Manchester United, has enjoyed an impressive first season at the London Stadium. The Englishman, 27, was in fine form once again as Graham Potter’s side fought to secure a 1-1 draw at Villa Park.
He delivered an all-action performance in a more advanced role, proving to be a real livewire in the right wing-back position as he contributed two key passes, four successful dribbles, four crosses and won six ground duels. That earned Wan-Bissaka praise from Match of the Day’s Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, who singled out his display after a spirited second half from West Ham. Richards began by saying on The Rest Is Football podcast: “I thought Wan-Bissaka was outstanding.” That prompted Lineker to interject: “I was going to say the same thing, brilliant performance.”.
Richards continued: “His energy, his work-rate, his delivery at times, his recovery runs, his tackle - it was just brilliant to see. He allowed them to push up and do what they needed to do.”. Wan-Bissaka was used exclusively as a full-back in a back four at Old Trafford last season under Erik ten Hag. Having been signed by the Red Devils for £50m five-and-a-half years ago, it ultimately proved a difficult spell for him as he largely failed to live up to the lofty price tag.
He played under several different managers, making 190 appearances but rarely putting together a run of consistent performances, particularly in his later seasons. He fell out of favour under Ten Hag and came close to leaving in the summer of 2023, before being convinced to stay by the Dutchman for another season.
