As we approach the end of winter, many Brits may be looking at their lawns and wondering when to make that first cut. According to gardening expert Calum Maddock from HomeHow, the average date for the first lawn cut in the UK is March 18. He said: "The grass will begin to grow when the soil temperature goes above six degrees Celsius. Before that, the grass will still remain dormant as it has over winter.".
However, he advises gardeners to keep an eye on local conditions and not to cut the grass when it's too wet. And when you do make that first cut, remember to only trim a small amount off - less than a third of the height is recommended for the first trim of the year.
Mowing the grass too close can lead to shallow roots and could put stress on the lawn, potentially making it more susceptible to diseases, drought, and bare patches. Instead of removing a large amount of grass at once, gardeners are advised to gradually trim off more length week by week as the growth rate increases, reports the Express.
Calum advised: "It is best to cut the grass later on in the day so that any potential frost has properly thawed and all dew has evaporated. It's always best to cut the grass when it is dry, so you may need to cut off the first cut if it has been particularly rainy during March.".
