Some people are just naturally gifted in sports that they're able to excel in any chosen field. Indiana Fever point guard Caitlin Clark just might be one of those people. Over the weekend, Clark's basketball jersey number was officially retired by the University of Iowa women's program. In the aftermath of that ceremony, highlights of Clark playing a different sport began to pick up some traction on social media.
Highlights from her career playing soccer were seemingly first posted to YouTube about ten months ago - showing off her proficiency in the sport while in high school. Comments at the time reflected some people's wonder at what may have been if Clark decided to stick with the sport. 'Would've loved to see [her] stick with soccer. Bet she'd be playing in Europe right now,' read one comment on a post to Reddit.
Higlights from Caitlin Clark's soccer career have gained traction online after a ceremony. Clark's No. 22 was officially retired by the Iowa women's basketball program on Sunday. Clark speaks to the crowd at Carver-Hawkeye Arena during the ceremony on Sunday. 'God has their favorites, and clearly I don't number amongst them,' said another Redditor. Under the YouTube video, one person wrote, 'She is so special, her abilities amaze me! There are so few people born with this type of athleticism! What a treasure!'.
Clark was a solid athlete in her time at Dowling Catholic High School in Iowa - playing two seasons of varsity soccer, according to the high school athletics site MaxPreps. According to the site, Clark played in 27 total games across her freshman and sophomore years - scoring a total of 42 goals and three assists in that span. But her basketball career was much better in high school - averaging 28 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game across 91 games of varsity action of all four years.
She was recruited for that sport much more heavily in high school and she eventually made the choice to drop soccer. The rest is history. Clark spurned Notre Dame to stay closer to home and led Iowa to consecutive national championship game appearances. She then went on to get drafted first overall by the Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft and has helped lead a revolution in viewership for the sport. It all came full circle on Sunday - when the number 22 went up into the rafters at Carver-Hawkeye Arena as Clark became the third women's player to have her number retired - joining Michelle Edwards and Megan Gustafson.
