Fans are convinced that Newcastle star Anthony Gordon aimed a thinly-veiled dig towards Arsenal after knocking them out of the Carabao Cup. Gordon's Newcastle marched on to Wembley with a 2-0 win at home in the second leg of the teams' semi-final clash on Wednesday. Having also won by the same scoreline in the first leg, the Magpies claimed a 4-0 victory on aggregate. England international Gordon scored the final goal to put the nail in Arsenal's coffin, capitalising on a mistake when the Gunners attempted to play out from the back. The result brought Arsenal fans back down to Earth following Sunday's incredible 5-1 victory over Manchester City, a result their fans saw as revenge after City striker Erling Haaland told boss Mikel Arteta to 'stay humble' earlier this season.
But the tables were turned at St James' Park, as Gordon used those exact words when discussing Newcastle's preparation for the final which takes place at Wembley on Sunday, March 18. "We had a game plan we thought would work. Everyone knows we press," the 23-year-old said in his Sky Sports post-match interview. "It's important for us to stay humble now. It will be a big occasion but it's so far away.".
His comments didn't go unnoticed by fans on social media. "No way Anthony Gordon just said 'it's important to stay humble, top class s***housery lad," one neutral commented. "Life hits you too fast in football these days," another added. "Absolutely superb," a third said. Newcastle will now face either Tottenham or Liverpool in the final and it'll be the second time that the Magpies have been to Wembley in two years, having lost to Manchester United in 2023. "It's huge. The first Wembley appearance was brilliant, it was sort of unexpected, but a club like this and where it wants to be, we need to be there regularly," manager Eddie Howe beamed.
Was Anthony Gordon making a dig at Arsenal? Have your say in the comments section. "We need to feel it's not a surprise. We're here on merit, our run's not been easy. Look at the teams we've had to face; I think it's four Premier League teams if I'm right, but we've done the hard yards and we've now got an opportunity. "Hopefully we can learn from the last one and just improve our performance. You have to learn from disappointing experiences. It wasn't a great performance from us [in the previous final]. I don't think it was particularly bad, but there's definitely things we can learn in our preparation and our build-up and our execution.".
