In the hours since the images of the 28-year-old Dune star riding the preferred transport of slightly buzzed East London baristas surfaced online, people have been scrambling to make sense of his decision. Many outlets have hypothesised that – given Chalamet’s insistence on method dressing as Bob Dylan during the press tour – the bike was a goofy nod to the folk singer’s motorcycle.
But one can’t help but notice a sense of gritted-teeth determination in everyone’s attempts to legitimise the weird stunt. It’s like your new boyfriend made another one of those cringeworthy comments at family dinner—this is not the first time—and now you’re left awkwardly defending him to your sister with, ‘He was being ironic!’ But deep down, are you even sure you believe that anymore?.
W Magazine bent over backward to explain the choice, writing: ‘The stunt seemed to be a very tongue-in-cheek reference to Dylan’s famous 1965 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival when he performed with an electric band after years of using only acoustic instruments.’.
