Music fans have been left stunned after learning the real meaning behind an iconic 70s rock band's name. Fans of AC/DC fans were excited after hearing the band will soon be back on the road, taking their tour over Europe in 2025. But even hardcore fans had no idea what the band's initials stand for. The legendary band's POWER UP tour will see Angus Young, Brian Johnson and Stevie Young joined by Matt Laug, filling in on drums for Phil Rudd, and Chris Chaney, on bass in place of Cliff Williams.
Four years on from releasing their 17th studio album, Power Up, the rockers will also be stopping off in Ireland, Germany and Belgium. Some fans believed the day would never come and were overjoyed with the thought of listening to some of their best-known tunes live. But less well-known is the full length version of their musical moniker. One fan took to Reddit to fine answers, according to Metro and asked, ‘What does AC/DC actually stand for?’.
Music fans have been left stunned after learning the real meaning behind Australian band AC/DC's name as the iconic 70s group prepare to hit the road in May to tour across Europe. And they were quickly bombarded with replies with one user, @psychological_Ad8534, dismissed rumours the band's name stood for ‘anti-christ/devil’s child’. Instead they revealed it really meant alternating current/direct current.
Founding members Angus and his late brother, Malcolm, who tragically died aged 64 in 2017, first revealed the meaning in an interview more than 25 years ago. Speaking to The Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop, they explained that the name of the band was actually down to their sister Margaret. When they were brainstorming, their sibling pointed to the AC/DC symbol on her sewing machine’s AC adaptor and suggested they incorporate it in to their name.
And the brothers agreed, deciding that it perfectly encapsulated the energy the band and summed up their powerful performances. The band first shot to fame in 1975 following the release of their first studio album, High Voltage - taking inspiration from their electrical themed name. Despite rocketing to fame, in 1979, the band experienced some difficulties when their lead singer, Bon Scott, died of alcohol poisoning, but they bounded back and have continued to be one of the most famous bands still performing in the last 50 years.
The legendary band's POWER UP tour will see Angus Young, Brian Johnson and Stevie Young joined by Matt Laug, filling in on drums for Phil Rudd, and Chris Chaney, on bass in place of Cliff Williams. But even die-hard fans who managed to get tickets were shocked to discover the inspiration behind the band's name was the AC/DC symbol on Angus and Malcom's sister's sewing machine. For fans desperate to see the band, they will be performing across Europe in 2025 from May through to August.
While fans lucky enough to get tickets are looking forward to a night of entertainment, some fans are in uproar after the childhood home of Angus and Malcolm was demolished in December. The property, located in the Sydney suburb of Burwood, was the first Australian home of rockers Angus, Malcolm and George , after they moved to Australia from Scotland in 1963. The modest home was purchased in February 2023 for $5.8million and demolished at the end of last year, leaving a vacant lot in its place.
Furious fans took to social media to express their disappointment at the piece of rock history being bulldozed. 'Awful to see destruction of history not only for the Australian music and cultural history, but also a possible museum tourist destinations destroyed! Very sad!' one heartbroken fan wrote. 'How does this happen. An utter disgrace,' a second person added. 'They could have sold small pieces as souvenirs,' a third user chipped in.
