FOLLOW the fun of Christmas with a fresh start at home. A little clearing out and cleaning up will give you a lift during the January gloom. Get your home sorted with these easy ideas. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: After the festive feeding frenzy, take stock of what is left in your food cupboard and fridge and use up anything that’s not past its best-before date.
Throw out anything that is. This is the time to tackle that groaning shelf of condiments. Half-eaten jars of cranberry sauce, chutney and mustard can all be given a second life in sauces and marinades. MAKE A PLAN: Tap into the trend for a January clear-out.
Break what can be an overwhelming task into manageable jobs to do each day. List every room, then add the spaces that need to be sorted in each. One day might be “tidy bathroom cabinet”, the next could be “clear kids’ clothes”. Assign a small job to each day and by the end of January you’ll be clutter free.
FIND PLACES FOR PRESENTS: As you put away new clothes and toiletries, free up space by clearing out anything you already have but no longer use. Unopened toiletries can be given to a food or hygiene bank and you can bag up clothes for charity or to sell online.
SCRUB UP NICELY: Once you have got rid of all the clutter, you can complete the most satisfying clean of the year. Get the whole family stuck in with scrubbing down bathrooms, vacuuming under furniture and dusting surfaces, as well as stripping beds. Pay special attention to the kitchen, wiping your microwave and hob, sponging down cupboards and cleaning the shelves from your fridge.
