WITH budgets stretched after Christmas, now is the perfect time to cash in by selling gear you no longer want. But you may also be able to flog things that you would normally chuck. Here are some of the surprising items that can become a nice littler earner.

EMPTY CANDLE JARS: When your favourite candle has come to an end, you probably pop the jar in recycling. However, there is a healthy market for selling on empty candle jars — especially if they are from posh brands. For example, an empty Diptyque jar recently sold for £8 on eBay. Next time your candle is finished, clean it out and try listing it.

BRANDED GIFT BAGS: Hang on to the packaging if you buy an item from an upmarket store, as you may find that you can sell gift boxes and bags for cash. A Jo Malone small gift bag sold for £4 on eBay this month. TESTERS: If you got a couple of freebies when buying some nice toiletries, there may be demand from online buyers. A 2ml Aesop eau de parfum recently went for £7.95 on eBay while a Chanel No.5 body lotion sachet was bought for £4.

USED PERFUME: If you have changed your mind about a perfume and the bottle is half-full, you can sell it on. A less than half-empty container of Gucci Flora has sold for £16 this year. Or if you’ve used up all your favourite scent, you may be able to make some money from the bottle by listing it online.
