Footy fans have hit out at both Essendon and Richmond for publishing woke Christmas messages on social media. Many fans, including one former NBA star, have hit out at the statements issued by both clubs, in which Richmond and Essendon refused to use the term 'Merry Christmas'.
Richmond took to X to publish a photoshopped image of a Christmas tree ball ball that had an image of the club's Punt Road training ground in front of the MCG photoshopped into it. The club added a caption alongside the X post, writing: 'Wishing everyone a safe and happy time.'.
Essendon similarly published an image of two players inside a snowglobe, which had the message: 'Dear Bomber army, happy holidays.'. But some fans were left questioning what was wrong with writing 'Happy Christmas'. Richmond Football Club and Essendon Football Club have been slammed for their Christmas messages on X.
Essendon wrote 'Happy holidays' while Richmond wrote: 'Wishing everyone a safe and happy time'. Footy fans branded the club's messages 'woke' and 'ridiculous' on social media. Former NBA star Andrew Bogut is taking to X to post a meme of Neo from the Matrix dodging bullets during the film.
He captioned the post: 'Live video found of. @AFL clubs trying to avoid saying “Merry Christmas“………. during Christmas.'. Other fans took to X to hit out at football clubs writing: 'Not sure how to spell "Christmas?"'. 'It's Merry Christmas,' another wrote.
