Gardeners across the UK have been urged to take immediate action as the country prepares to face one of the worst storms in 25 years. With Storm Eowyn set to plunge the UK and Ireland into freezing temperatures and turbulent winds, experts from Hillier Garden Centre have issued an urgent plea to gardeners to look out for birds.
Speaking to The Mirror, wildlife experts pleaded for those with bird feeders - more than half of UK households - to take extra measures to safeguard some of the nation's most beloved feathered friends ahead of the storm. In particular, experts advised gardeners to top up bird feeders with high-fat foods - for example suet - to help keep feathered friends nourished in hard times.
Countless British birds, including robins, wrens, blackbirds, blue tits, kingfishers and firecrests, could be at risk during the storm, experts warned. On top of a bitter ice blast and savage storms, parts of the north of the country are also expected to face snowfall, making the conditions for birds yet more challenging.
To ensure they have continued access to fresh water, gardeners are encouraged to smash the top later of ice on bird baths and bowls. Gardeners should also be sure to change the water regularly so birds can keep clean - a particularly important step in harsh weather conditions.
