Gary Neville has asked Des Lynam to stop saying he could manage Manchester United in an effort to avoid more ridicule from Jamie Carragher. The Red Devils have already made their way through three head coaches this season across what has been a miserable campaign. Erik ten Hag, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ruben Amorim have all taken charge.

But that has not improved matters with United sitting a lowly 13th in the Premier League. And legendary broadcaster Lynam has made a bold suggestion to get the club back on track - by putting former defender Neville in charge of the side. But he has turned down the chance to replace Amorim in an amusing reply to Lynam. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I always got on with Des but if you could please stop putting me forward for the manager of Manchester United, it would be quite helpful. I understand where you’re coming from.

“I do understand the club. I do love the club. I do believe I could communicate well. However, one, I don’t want to go back into coaching. Number two, I don’t believe that I’m the best man for the job by a long way and it gives my friend and colleague - Mr James Carragher - an opportunity to giggle quite a bit on a Thursday afternoon when he sees the headlines.

“So no I love Des to bits but I’m pretty sure he’s not right on that one but I feel bad telling him he’s not right because he’s someone with such vast experience and I don’t like telling people who are older than me, who’ve got vast experience, that they’re not quite right.”.
