Gavin and Stacey star Laura Aikman has been sharing more secrets from the last ever episode - this time revealing how the costume team sourced her wedding dress without tipping anyone off. The long-running BBC sitcom reached a definitive conclusion on Christmas Day and showed James Corden's Smithy set to marry Laura's Sonia - only to leave her at the alter to declare his love for Ruth Jones's Nessa. The appearance of Sonia in the finale plot took fans completely by surprise - and it has already been revealed that show bosses went to extreme lengths to keep her involvement a top secret.
Now that the last ever episode has been aired, Laura is able to explain all the behind-the-scenes extremes that the cast and crew went to in order to keep her involvement a complete secret. And, indeed, on Sunday she revealed that the dress she wore for the wedding scenes had to be bought online - with no wedding dress fittings possible.
Sharing snaps of herself wearing the dress, the TV star explained in an Instagram post: "We couldn’t go wedding dress shopping (because of the secrecy), so this was from Vinted, (it probably belonged to someone who watched the show!) Shout out to our costume designer #ShanJames who had to alter it massively as 48 hrs before we shot the wedding it didn’t fit. Our formidable make up designer #marcuswhitney found me this amazing wig, yes IT’S A WIG. It was fitted & styled by gorgeous @alisonwebbxxmakeup who also did my make up and hid with me.".
Laura's involvement in the last ever episode was so closely guarded that even her own family had no idea she would be in the episode until they tuned in to watch on Christmas Day. Taking to social media after the episode aired, Laura shared video footage of her family reacting in shock to see her on their TV screen.
