George Michael's lavish London mansion in ruins as sister pleads with council for help

George Michael's huge London mansion has been left in ruins. The late musician died in 2016, leaving behind the £10 million mansion as part of his jaw-dropping £98 million fortune. The Wham! star left the estate to his two sisters - Yioda and Melanie Panayiotou - but only Yioda is living to look after the property. George bought it in 1987, but it started falling into disrepair, even being burgled in 2002.
Yioda has now been permitted by the council to make the house “habitable” again with help from architects BB Partnership, according to The Sun. Unfortunately, it looks like it might be a long journey until the house will become a home, with many applications submitted to the council in order to whip it into shape. Landscape designers at the property had earmarked nine trees to the council for either heavy pruning or to be felled, as they could damage the property but are in a Conservation Area, meaning they can’t be taken care of without the green light.
Many of the trees are over 10 metres tall and in “close proximity of the building,” including a holly, a thuja, and a “fast growing” cypress. The application is said to clarify that these actions are both for “maintenance” of the property and to “control encroachment.”. Beyond the trees, the outlet reports that Yioda has plans to install solar panels along with a whole new roof, doors, and windows, and to turn one of the garages into a livable space. Photos of the property show it covered in scaffolding, with the assumption that while it could be worth upwards of £10 million once the work is done, Yioda herself might live in the London pad.
George tragically passed away on Christmas Day of 2016, when the beloved pop star was found dead at his home in Goring-on-Thames aged just 53. The singer’s partner, Fadi Fawaz, went to wake him up in the morning, but found him lifeless in bed. In a statement, Fadi said: "We were supposed to be going for Christmas lunch. I went round there to wake him up and he was just gone, lying peacefully in bed. Everything had been very complicated recently, but George was looking forward to Christmas, and so was I.".
George and Fadi had been together since 2012, and the hairstylist shared his heartbreak over the loss. He tweeted soon after the startling discovery of George’s body: "It's a Xmas I will never forget finding your partner dead peacefully in bed first thing in the morning... I will never stop missing you xx". The cause of George’s death wasn’t revealed until the following March, when a coroner ruled that George died of natural causes from dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle, which causes the muscle to become stretched and thin over time, which affects how blood can be pumped around the body.
Tragically, just three years later, George’s sister died - also on Christmas Day. Melanie Panayiotou died exactly three years after her brother, at the age of 59. The family confirmed in a statement that Melanie "passed away suddenly" over Christmas, after she fell into a diabetic coma. Like this story?
