The stars are coming out to play at Pebble Beach, with Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy both making their first PGA Tour starts of the season. Scheffler has predictably been installed as a clear 11-2 favourite, even though he has been away from the course for almost two months now, delaying his return by three weeks after slicing his hand open on Christmas Day.
McIlroy has the benefit of an outing in Dubai, where he finished strongly to earn a share of fourth at the Desert Classic. But his form at Pebble is pretty average - the smallest greens on Tour tend to expose the 12-1 shot’s dodgy wedge game - and it may pay to look at some of the longer priced contenders.
And the one who stands out is world No 6 Ludvig Aberg, who looks attractively priced at 18-1. Find The Sun's betting publishing principles here. Aberg was runner-up here last year when making his Pebble Beach debut. He looked the likely winner until Wyndfham Clark burst out of the pack with a course record 60.
Before last week’s Farmers Insurance Open I said I wanted to see more evidence that Aberg had fully recovered from knee surgery - and he provided it with a stunning first round 63. I was impressed at the way Aberg gutted it out after going down with a bout of food poisoning after that. A share of 42nd place was certainly no disgrace. If he shows the same grit here, he will be tough to beat.
