Graham Potter’s sly comment about his horror spell as Chelsea head coach was picked up by a microphone at Stamford Bridge on Monday. Potter was handed the Chelsea managerial job in September 2022 but lasted less than seven months before he was sacked by the Blues. After his nightmare stint in west London, Potter spent time time away from management before replacing Julen Lopetegui at West Ham last month.

Potter made his Chelsea return on Monday night, with his West Ham side blowing a 1-0 lead before eventually losing 2-1 to Enzo Maresca’s men. As he sat down for his post-match press conference, Potter muttered a six-word message under his breath about his time as Chelsea’s head coach. A microphone in the Chelsea media room picked up what Potter said before he faced any questions from journalists and reporters.

‘I don’t miss being in here,’ Potter was heard saying ahead of his press conference, in a reference to his ill-fated spell in charge of Chelsea. Potter’s time as Chelsea boss ended up becoming incredibly toxic with players reportedly having ‘unflattering nicknames’ for the Englishman. During Potter’s spell in charge, Chelsea fans could be heard singing the name of their former head coach Thomas Tuchel on numerous occasions.

Potter, who was handed the Chelsea job for his fine work at Brighton, later revealed he had received emails wishing death on him and his children. In a press conference two months before his sacking, Potter said: ‘I’ve had some not particularly nice emails come through that want me to die and want my kids to die. So that’s obviously not pleasant to receive.’. Potter added: ‘Your family life suffers, your mental health suffers, your personality – it is hard.’.

Chelsea dismissed Potter in April 2023 after a total of 31 games in charge, with the 49-year-old having a winning percentage of just 38.71.
