US President Donald Trump's vow to crack down on gender ideology got off to a shaky start on Thursday as the 97th Academy Award nominations were announced in Los Angeles. Newly inaugurated Trump has vowed to transform 'troubled' Hollywood's ailing film industry over the next four years with a promise to bring back its early to mid-twentieth century Golden Age.

He also ruled that the United States will only recognise two sexes - male and female - which are 'not changeable', and demanded officials use the term 'sex' rather than 'gender'. His order mandates ID documents - such as passports and visas - be based on 'an individual's immutable biological classification as either male or female'.

But he was sent a very 21st century response as this year's Oscar nominations were read out on Thursday morning, with films that directly address gender identity running riot across the forthcoming ceremony's 23 categories.
