How to turn off Apple Intelligence as AI spouts fake news and hogs up more storage

Despite the cacophony of hype surrounding Apple Intelligence, the AI software isn’t to everyone’s taste. Maybe, you’re unimpressed with its email re-writing skills (you’re not alone). Perhaps, the grouped notification summaries are zapping all the personality from your blithe WhatsApps. Or, worst of all, you’re simply ignoring it while the AI eats more storage on your iPhone with each update.
To that end, a recent report indicated that Apple Intelligence requires 7GB of space on iOS 18.2, almost double the 4GB it took up at launch. Alas, those fake news headlines it’s been generating aren’t doing its reputation any good, either. In an alarming turn of events, the AI recently told users that Luigi Mangione, who is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself.
To its credit, Apple was quick to react, promising an update in the coming weeks that will further clarify when AI is being used to generate summaries. Clearly, there are plenty of reasons why you might want to ditch Apple Intelligence altogether. If you’re hellbent on going AI-free on your iPhone, here’s what you need to do.
To completely turn off the AI software, just head to your settings, scroll down and tap Apple Intelligence and Siri. Now, assuming you previously turned Apple Intelligence on, just toggle the top button off. This will kill all of the AI functionalities, from the Writing Tools to the email summaries to Genmoji, until you enable them again.
However, if you want to take a more focused approach, then you can also disable specific features. For instance, you can turn off those problematic notification summaries via settings > notifications > summarise notifications. On this page, you can also disable notification summaries for specific apps.
