Tahir Mehmood, 47, and his wife, Deepika Benjamin, 41, have made it a habit to take their three-year-old son Isaac on a staycation every month. Over the past year, the family has travelled to places like Bournemouth, Hastings, and Weymouth for some quality family time. In 2024 their top trip in 2024 was to Blackpool, a favourite beach destinations of Tahir from his childhood days.

Tahir believes these breaks are 'good for family wellbeing' and cherishes the opportunity to create as many memories as possible. Tahir, who didn't get the opportunity to go on many holidays as a child, said the UK as much to offer: "As a country, we're blessed with so much to see and do, even on short breaks whether its beaches, countryside locations or quintessentially British towns and villages.".

When planning his trips Tahir advises that it's always beneficial to plan them in advance to help stick to a budget. He will always book his accommodation in advance to secure the cheapest prices and will research free local attractions to keep costs down.

Research commissioned by Sykes Holiday Cottages revealed that the top places for a short break in the UK in 2025 were York, Edinburgh, and Bath. Other popular destinations included Windermere, Whitby and Cambridge. The top reasons for taking such breaks are relaxation, escaping the daily grind, and sightseeing. Many staycations also result from visiting loved ones, celebrating birthdays, or planning a romantic weekend.
