As we trade in pigs in blankets for Tupperware lunches and 7am starts, it feels pretty understandable that everyone would be reaching straight for the coffee machine this January. But surely it goes against that big health kick you’ve just mentally committed to? Surely it’s better to rouse the body and brain naturally, or at least wait a little before injecting that sweet, delicious caffeine straight into your bloodstream?.

Apparently not! According to new research from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the first major study into the health benefits of drinking coffee at different times, people who enjoy a hot cup of java in the morning can feel more health benefits than those who drink it later in the day.

Coffee has always been a highly debated substance, especially in recent history. In 1991, it was listed as a possible carcinogen by the World Health Organization, causing quite a stir among the caffeine-oriented. Then, in 2016, it was exonerated, and further research has discovered a host of potential benefits (when consumed correctly, as is the case with anything). From the recent study into heart health benefits to reducing dementia risk, here are a handful.

After analysing the coffee habits of over 40,000 adults, US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) researchers found that morning coffee drinkers may actually be healthier than those who forego coffee entirely. According to the research, morning coffee drinkers were 16 per cent less likely to die of any cause and 31 per cent less likely to die from cardiovascular disease during a 10-year follow-up period than those who went without.
