Liverpool or Tottenham will book their place in the Carabao Cup final on Thursday night when they clash at Anfield in the second leg of their semi-final. Spurs won the first leg 1-0 in north London to give them a narrow advantage as they travel to Merseyside. The Reds are still firmly in the tie, though, and go into the contest in relentlessly good form, sitting top of the Premier League table. Tottenham, in contrast, are having a shocking season in the top flight, sitting 14th in the table, but they have been good in the cup competitions. Ange Postecoglou’s team remain in contention for the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Europa League, with their focus firmly on the EFL Cup on Thursday night.

Waiting for either side in the Wembley final are Newcastle United after their thoroughly impressive semi-final performances against Arsenal. The Magpies won 2-0 at the Emirates and then beat the Gunners by the same scoreline at St James’ Park on Wednesday night. 51 mins: Mo Salah makes no mistake from the spot. An extremely confident left-footed effort is fired into the top corner. Immense penalty.

49 mins: Darwin Nunez through on goal, pokes the ball past Kinsky who brings him down. An obvious penalty. 47 mins: More concern for Tottenham immediately as Nunez finds Salah on the right of the area, he skips inside Spence but his shot is deflected wide. Two corners follow, the second is nodded on by Szoboszlai and palmed away by Kinsky. Gakpo fires in another shot, which is saved. It looks like service has been resumed from before the break.

Kick-off: The second half gets underway. Can Spurs turn things round?. Half-time: Liverpool finished the first half with 72.7 per cent possession. The home side had 11 shots to Tottenham’s one. Half-time: The whistle goes after a Conor Bradley raid ends in a goal-kick. Liverpool have dominated the game so far with Spurs pinned back and restricted to pretty tame bursts on the counter. However, the tie is still level at 1-1 so it is in the balance, despite how much stronger the home side has been so far.

45+4 mins: After a quieter few minutes the Liverpool pressure resumes. Conor Bradley swings in a cross which is headed behind for a corner. It comes to nothing, but Spurs spend more time camped in their own third. 46 mins: It is game over for Richarlison, seemingly with a calf problem. On comes a debutant, loan signing from Bayern Munich, Mathys Tel for his first taste of English football. 44 mins: Richarlison goes down off the ball, hitting the turf in frustration at a potential injury.

Liverpool are not fussed and go back on the attack, a cross finds Salah at the back post who volleys into the ground and his shot is tipped over by Kinsky. 42 mins: A brief moment of respite for Spurs from the Liverpool domination as Kulusevski breaks but fires a shot high and wide. 37 mins: Huge challenge for Spurs now as Liverpool have been in charge all game and now seem full of confidence. Tottenham are deep and digging in, but there is a long way to go.

34 mins: And there is that goal that seemed inevitable. Cody Gakpo puts Liverpool ahead on the night. Salah used the outside of his left boot to fire the ball across goal from the right. Nunez completely missed an attempted volley but Gakpo fired home first time at the back stick. 32 mins: It does feel like a Liverpool goal is inevitable tonight. Robertson picks out Salah at the back post but he’s on his wrong foot and his right-footed effort is wild and wide.

30 mins: Excitement at Anfield but the flag is up!. Salah slides in Szoboszlai who finishes smartly but the flag is up swiftly and the Hungarian was marginally offside. 29 mins: Tricky work from Gakpo on the left and a good cross finds Nunez, but he is leaning away from goal and can only send a tame header straight at Kinsky. 26 mins: Salah cuts in from the right and is actually trying a pass, but a flick off Bissouma sends it worryingly towards his own goal. Kinsky dives but watches it bobble wide.

24 mins: It’s a predictably lively atmosphere at Anfield, with both sets of supporters in fine voice. 22 mins: Liverpool pressure is building but they can’t find a way through just yet. Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch fire in back-to-back efforts from the edge of the box. Both blocked. 18 mins: It’s been mostly all Liverpool so far but Spurs have a little bit of joy, winning a free-kick in the opponent’s half and then a corner, but it comes to nothing.

The home team dominating possession and spending most of the time in the Spurs half. 13 mins: A strange incident sees Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky fumble a cross and land on his teammate Ben Davies, leaving the keeper with a sore face and the defender bleeding from the forehead. Davies has to leave the pitch to get patched up but will continue. Arrow MORE: Myles Lewis-Skelly’s mum admits she mixes him up with Arsenal team-mate during matches.
