Lewis Hamilton's pre-season testing hit a bump in the road on Wednesday when the seven-time world champion crashed at the Circuit de Catalunya. It was hardly the ideal way to mark his third day of pre-season testing on a £50million-per-year deal with the Scuderia.
But some fans on social media have been sharing a stat which suggests that the faux-pas could actually be a good omen for the Brit. That's because Hamilton endured pre-season crashes in Spain ahead of his first campaigns with McLaren and Mercedes - and went on to win the title in his second campaigns there.
In 2007 he had a high-speed blow with McLaren in Valencia before claiming the title in 2008, while a brakes failure led to another incident with Mercedes at Jerez in 2013, only for him to become champion in 2014. Following the same trend, some think his latest smash is a portent that he could well claim a record eighth Drivers' World Championship with the Scuderia in 2026.
Some fans think Lewis Hamilton's latest pre-season testing crash is a positive omen. He also crashed in his first stint of tests with McLaren and Mercedes in Spain, before going on to win the title in his second season. Obviously, title winners are hardly decided by such quirks of circumstance, but supporters will be eager to see a correlation.
Autosport shared the graphic on Instagram and the comments flooded in. 'Spain tracks and Lewis crashing during testing. We got ourselves an 8 time world champion in 2026,' one user wrote. 'Nice, Charles is the champion this year and next year Hamilton, I take that!' another added.
