Kay Burley hits back at This Morning star after Sky News exit

Kay Burley has furiously responded to a This Morning star who said she was ‘TV’s answer to Liz Truss’ in the wake of her departure from Sky News. The British broadcaster, 64, sent shockwaves through the nation when she announced her shock retirement from the channel after 36 years yesterday. However, in a scathing article Camilla Tominey, who regularly appears on This Morning to discuss news segments, said ‘some may say good riddance’ and described her as ‘resilient as her facelift.’.

In response, Kay accused the journalist, 46, of making misogynistic remarks and said there was a ‘special place in hell’ for women who tear down other women. She wrote: ‘#Sweetie ⁦@CamillaTominey⁩ as the late, great Madeleine Albright said, there is a special place in hell for women who don’t support other women.’. Camilla wrote in The Telegraph: ‘Some may say good riddance but like her or loathe “Hurley Burley”, you can’t fault the 64-year-old’s staying power.

The Good Morning Britain presenter said she was ‘a fierce advocate for viewers, a powerful interviewer and a supporter of women in television’. She wrote on X: ‘That she gets her own #BreakingNews announcement is testament to @KayBurley impact on news journalism. Echoing Susanna’s sentiment, BBC journalist Victoria Derbyshire said Kay had ‘blazed an absolute trail’ for female journalists.

Former BBC Newsnight producer Sam McAlister, who secured the Newsnight interview with the Duke of York, also said she was ‘devastated’ to hear Kay was retiring, describing her as a ‘total inspiration’ to her as a single parent and woman from a different background. Responding to social media posts praising her work, Kay said she had benefitted from ‘women supporting other women.’. Kay was recruited for the fledgling Sky News in 1989 as one of its founding presenters.

In September 2018, the broadcaster was given her own show on Sky News as part of a major shake-up at the channel and a year later she moved to the breakfast time slot. While Kay has celebrated many successes during her tenure, including a Bafta for her coverage of 9/11, she has not been immune from controversy. During the coronavirus pandemic, she regularly grilled politicians about lockdown rules and questioned then Cabinet minister Michael Gove on the controversy over former No 10 adviser Dominic Cummings’ trip to Barnard Castle in May 2020.

But in December 2020, Kay was suspended from her role for six months after an internal review found she broke Covid-19 rules during celebrations for her 60th birthday. She later apologised for her actions, describing herself as an ‘idiot’ and agreeing that she was ‘appropriately sanctioned’ by the channel. Got a story?.
