Kay Burley’s potential replacement at Sky News is already being speculated on after she announced her departure from the channel after 36 years. The Sky News presenter, who is a staple on the broadcaster's breakfast show weekdays from 7am until 10am, announced she is leaving today while live on air – and shared that the show would be her last. The 64-year-old journalist has reported on some of the biggest global events, including 9/11, the death of Princess Diana, and the Concorde air disaster. Earlier today, she bid farewell during her final appearance on Sky News Breakfast, calling her time at the network an “honour and a privilege.”.
Kay said: "From a standing start to one of the most recognised and valued brands in global news, its been an honour and privilege to work with some of the best and hardest working teams in the business. From a standing start to one of the most recognised and valued brands in global news, its been an honour and privilege to work with some of the best and hardest working teams in the business. "But we've also enjoyed some wonderful high notes too, haven't we - the thrill of London winning the chance to host the 2012 Olympics; a plethora of royal weddings; jubilees and who can forget days and days and days waiting for royal babies to arrive at the Lindo Wing.
"But after over a million minutes of live TV news - more than anyone else in the world - its time for me to indulge in some of my other passions - including my love for travel. So, after covering 12 separate general elections - including Sir Keir Starmer's victory last year - I am retiring from Sky News - let politicians of every party just rejoice at that news!. "Thank you for waking up and tuning in every morning. I can't tell you how much I have appreciated your support over the last three and a half decades: You're awesome. I will post more on my social media and hope to see you around. Please keep in touch.".
Following her exit, betting site BetIdeas has named several potential successors. Currently leading the odds at 3/1 is Sarah-Jane Mee, a familiar face on Sky News. Mee presents The UK Tonight and regularly anchors the channel’s weekday coverage. She is also known for hosting Saturday Night Football on Sky Sports. Close behind her is Sophie Ridge, another Sky News presenter, with odds of 5/1. Ridge, who has been with the network since 2001, previously hosted Sophie Ridge on Sunday, a weekly political show that aired from 2017 to 2023. Other names in the mix include former Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan and Channel 5 presenter Dan Walker.
